Question:

Should I Carry Letters / Packages Back From Cuba On Behalf Of Cubans?

I have been to Cuba several times already. Frequently I am approached in my hotel by Cubans who request that I carry letters or packages back with me on their behalf, when I leave the island to return home to Canada. Is doing this something that could help them? Would I get in any trouble for doing this?

  1. Sure I do it all the time, the Cuban mail is slow as is ours in Canada.  You aren't going to get into trouble and I'd be as close to positive as possible that there won't be drugs in it mainly because the employees at the resorts treasure those jobs so very much.  I hope you do that little favor for your Cuban friends.

  2. To protect yourself, I suggest that you refuse them nicely. Make up a reason why you can't bring it. As you said, you are approached by Cubans in your hotel, I presume that you don't know them. You'll never know what's inside those packages, there could be drugs or anything illegal, you'll never know you might get yourself into trouble.

  3. Use your discernment. If they are friends of yours and you're sure of what the letter/package is, it is helpful for them.

I've done it because I knew who it was coming from and what it was.

Some may be willing to show you what it is they are sending so you're not uneasy about it. As for drugs, it is HIGHLY unlikely...which is why they would have no problem showing you what they would like you to send for them.

If they don't want to show you, then I'd be discerning about it...naturally.

But for the most part, it's nice of you to be able to do for them.

  4. Only if the letter  is in an open envelope and you are allow to check it out.

But NO to any packages, there may be something illegal hidden. Come to think of it, why don't they just mail their letters? I know, Canada Post is not very  reliable, and takes a long time for the letter to reach the recipient.    But if anything urgent, they can always call collect to the person in Canada.

  5. Never do this?!?! There could be drugs in there!?
