This is my problem.

I run a tennis site, http://topspinsports.com I would like to exand my reach to people outside of the us (or outside of .com). Tennis is extremely popular in united kingdom and other places that use addresses other then .com.

Can I buy a .ca or .co.uk name and have my site automatically upload to all domains???

Do you think this is a good idea?

Will it increase traffic?

Has anyone had any similar experiences?

THANKS!

  1. I personally go against setting up new domains for the countries for which the main language is being English. For other countries like france, netherlands, russia etc. you can go for a separate domain.

Because in the first case, your site might have got some credibility in the search engines and with that credibility you can go with getting links form countries like UK to rank for your targeted keywords. This is because the language is going to be same and the most of the keywords is also going to be same for your website. If you do create a separate website you need to go for a unique content for each sites. If it fails then your website suffers in rankings for the keywords. If you do go for setting a new domain then for some keywords one of your website is going to be competitor for another website and in some cases 2 or more can come up.

In the second case the entire language is going to be different so you need to go for a new website and make sure that your IP of the server and location of the server must be from the country where you are going to launch a new website.

For example if your domain name is www.example.fr then the IP and server location should be in France.

  2. I would actually buy the domain specific for the country - .ca or .uk and set it up in Google Webmaster tools to target each country specifically.

this may take a bit more work, but it will eventually increase your reach

you should definitely write content that is unique to each site and not duplicate it from the .com site

  3. Hi Steve,

I would recommend against setting up separate .ca or .co.uk domains with copies of your main website, as this would result in duplicate content issues.

Duplicate content penalties aren't what they used to be, so it's not like Google will drop a site from the index.  Basically, Google will make a determination on which site is the original content source, and toss the other sites out.  (Check out the seomoz link below) for an illustrated explanation)

In short, having multiple copies of your site on different country TLDs won't help you.

If you wanted to target other countries, the best way would be to have unique content on each site catering to each market.  This would require a decent amount of work on your part though, but would be the best way to target those markets.

Otherwise, you could include country specific content on your main site and try obtaining links from other websites with .ca or .co.uk TLDs.  This would probably be the easiest and quickest way to go.

Creating new sites from scratch for each country would be a lot of work, and would take a while to achieve rankings...

    Cheers,

    John

  4. If you are going to do this then you will need to ensure that each website is unique otherwise you are going to have problems with Google. If you have duplicate content on each site then Google will only display one of them so you will have lost the value of getting more than one domain name.
