Question:

Should I Just Leave or Be Courteous

I've been having relationship/roommate issues for some time now. I've been saving my money to just start over in a place of my own. I want for this to be so quick that I've planned on getting new appliances/furniture because (1)everything was 7-10 yrs old when he moved in; and (2) I don't want any reminders of the whole debacle.

Last night, I was told not one, but two lies to my face. I won't get into how I know he wasn't telling the truth and I'm not going to shake him down but I'm so serious about leaving that Tom Leykis advice is beginning to sound good.

He told this one guy to leave his woman/roommate when she starts acting out (or whatever the problem was) BUT have already a home furnished and do not give her notice (which is what I did originally) that he is not coming back - thus sticking her with the rent.

I've had this done to me and I did not appreciate it but when you've given someone the common courtesy and they just laugh and say you're not serious *shurgs*.

What do you think about that advice?

  1. It depends on how bad the situation is.  If it is so bad you can't live with the other person anymore, go ahead and furnish another place and leave.  Just a warning though... if your name is on the lease, you will be expected to pay at least one month's share of the rent.  I know if someone tried to do that to me, I'd be taking them to court for as much rent as possible.  I believe you are required by law to submit at least a 30 day notice to the landlord that you will be leaving the property.  Doesn't mean they won't make you pay up for the rest of the term of the lease.

  2. This is complicated, but if it where me I would give notice, after I had everything in place to move out, but only a week or less, just the time you need to pack your personal stuff. Luck.

  3. Be Courteous
