Question:

Should I Wait to Buy a DTV Converter Box?

I already used my 2 government coupons to get the DTV converter boxes. I still have another TV that will need a converter box though. I've heard that the prices are supposed to start falling soon. Does anybody know if this is true? Should I wait until after February 17, 2009 (end of analog broadcasting)? It seems like after that then the prices might really drop. What do people suggest I do?

  1. There is a place called freecycle.org where people give away stuff or place an ad wanting stuff.  Check first to see if someone, located around your area, has one they are not using anymore cause they bought a new TV.

  2. I think the prices will not drop until 2010.

When you used your coupon, the price of the unit was probably $60.00. The retailers do that so they can make $20.00 from your purchase.

After February, people who procrastinated will be desperate to get their boxes. The retailers will probably leave the prices at $60.00. Because people will pay. They will also want to entice folks to buy a new $200 - $400 TV rather than the converter box.

They might have a big sale in February to get people to use that coupon before it expires and to get rid of the boxes so they can sell more TV's.

I would say, shop around online and find a unit at a decent price and get it. Or wait for the TV's to go on sale and just upgrade one of your regular TV's to digital.

    Good luck.

  3. I am no economist, but I agree with most of what the other guy said.  If prices will fall on these converter boxes, it will not be until after February 17, 2009.
