Question:

Should I apply early decision?

I'm applying to colleges, and my grades show an upwards trend. I did horribly my sophomore year, but got all As in Junior year. I'm planning to work hard and get As my senior year as well.

However, will it benefit or hurt me if I apply for early decision to a college? I know my grades the first semester of senior year will be good and show a continued trend upwards. However, I don't want to lessen my chances by applying regularly. What do you suggest?

  1. There are two types of early decision, Binding and Non-Binding.  You don't want to make an early decision and have it be binding unless you are sure you want to go there.  If it's a non-binding early decision, there is no problem.  By applying early, you will get first consideration for scholarship money, and there can be a lot.  Also, by applying early, you will know if you are accepted or not.

  2. Totally depends on the college. If it's a good college and your grades/scores are below average it's unlikely to help you. You may as well wait until you can apply with higher stats. If it's a mid level school where your stats are at least average and the unconnected ED applicants really get a boost, then yes, go ED. You need to understand the specific school and what ED does or does not mean there.
