Should I ask for a Reference?

Should I ask for a reference from a teaching position where I left after two months? I left on good terms with them, but did feel l had "ditched" them because I did not stay to finish the term.

I am applying for more teaching positions, and this job is the only teaching experience I have had in the last two years.

  1. If you have a really good reason for having left mid term (like had a baby or you moved far away) then I would say go for it.  But I would not ask for a private reference...meaning...I would want to see it before it got sent anywhere.

  2. Did you resign and did they ACCEPT your resignation?  We had a teacher who left after two weeks (maybe not even that long)  He handed in his resignation but it was not accepted by our board.  That means that he is still technically employed and I am sure that he had his license revoked.

Even though you left on good terms, they may not see it that way.  Teachers who leave without it being a major emergency (was that the case with you?) are usually looked down upon.

If you ask for a reference, go and ask them personally rather  than via phone or letter.   This will show more class.  Good luck.  I am glad to see that you are staying in the profession.  We don't just need teachers.  We need good ones.

    Best wishes!

  3. well if you feel that you left in good terms, then yes ask for a ref. but, if it makes you AT ALL uncomfortable to do so - like if you think it will compromise the jobs that you are applying for, then all means do not ask for one. seems like you have enough teaching exp in the past that you don't need that one. good luck.
