Question:

Should I attend my high school graduation?

Hi, I'm looking for an outside opinion about a little dilemma I have. This is actually pretty far in advance, but I need to decide sooner rather than later.

When I was in ninth grade, I was bullied in school and became very depressed. I ended up withdrawing for the last grading period of the year and took cyber school classes to finish. That summer, I went to a camp to rebuild my confidence-- I returned home a new person with a completely new outlook on life. I continued going to the same school that fall, and within the first month, the bullying had worsened. My parents and I made the final decision to leave the school for good. Because of financial circumstances, though, it was impossible for me to switch schools or move. My school said that the bullying was out of their control and that they could do nothing to help me, besides put me in cyber school again. It was my only choice, so I finished tenth grade in three months on the computer. After that, I was old enough to take dual enrollment classes at a local college. I loved it, and I am completing my high school graduation requirements that way.

My question for you is that, in 2010, when my class (which I attended with since kindergarten) graduates, should I walk across the stage to receive my diploma? How important was it for you, having that ceremony and tradition? My high school experience has been.. a little nontraditional to say the least, haha. But I am still considered part of that class, though I do not take classes at my actual high school. What do you think?

Thanks so much :) Kate

  1. Never pass up a graduation it is a once in a lifetime events.

  2. Girl! Get your butt across that stage! Let them know that your still standing! and your ahead of the curve! and someday thoes bullies will be pumping your gas! mowing your grass and washing your windows!   When you get midway across the stage stop and look at a few of them and say! HOW YA! LIKE ME NOW! HATERS!

On a lighter note! there mean because there life sucks!

  4. I'm so sorry that you've had such a terrible high school experience.  But I want to congratulate you for not taking the bullying and for still pursuing your education!  You seem like a very strong person!  So I'd say, walk across the stage.  You worked harder than most of the people who will be getting your diplomas.  You'll prove that you did it - you went through bullying and an indifferent school system and financial problems and you got the prize at the end.  Your story is really inspiring!

  5. Hey kate, I am 25 and I must say that graduating is still something I remember dearly. I have to believe you still have friends at that school and they are the ones you will remember. The bully is just a tool, you went the right route and when they are working at Denny's you will laugh with your education.
