I have 2 cats and I really love them and I know they like me too. I volunteer at an animal shelter with cats and I have been doing it for awhile now. I'm thinking about being a feline vet. But I know there is more to being a vet then hugging them and giving them attention. I heard that vets are a lot harder then human doctors.

What kind of things do vets do? Medicine, shots,check ups?

And what kind of colleges offer that kind of education and for how long? I heard 4 years of school, then 4 more years.

  2. Yes, you should be one, just the fealing you get when you save a dying animals life... not to mention all the respect you get from an animal's owner when you help their pet.  if you are a big time anumal lover you should really consider being a vet!!!

       Vets basically just help animals in any way.  i was a vet intern for 5 years and i loved it ... the only thing i didnt like was all the paperwork....

  3. Veterinary schools are VERY competative to get into. Yes, you have to get your undergraduate degree, then got to vet school for 4 more years where you will be required to work with a large variety of animals (regardless of your desired speciality), including deliviering horses and calves. Several state universities have a vet program.

    Veterinarians do all the things you mentioned: check ups, prescribe medicine, give shots, draw blood and run tests (on urine too), perform surgery, look for parasites in fecal matter, inspect ears for yeast and mites, help impregnate and deliver kittens (mostly for breeders), euthanise, ect.

    Veterinarians do not make a lot of money either considering the amount of school they have to go through and versus human docotors. Unless you want to be a large animal farm doctor (where there are big bucks right now) there is not as much money in it as you would think. Plus you have to deal with clients that will bite and scratch you, and perhaps infect you with ringworm.

  4. you are asking as though anyone can become one if they like animals

    first you need a 4 yr bachelor of science degree from university with very good marks! then you need to apply to vet/med school which is competetive.

    vet = doctor = hard

    if you pursue this then you must first get into a BSc. program and then consider applying to vet.
