Should I be able to see water in my shower drain?

My shower started to smell so I took off the cap to clean underneath it and I noticed it is filled with water. It drains fine. If it wasn't for the smell (which is still present) I would not have noticed it.

You might be looking at the water that stays in the trap, just below the drain.  As far as the smell, I use Fabuloso, an all-purpose cleaner.  It's available at most supermarkets, and I pour just a couple of tablespoons into each drain.  It makes the entire house smell great!

If your trap happens to be directly under the shower drain you would see water in it.Try pouring bleach in it to kill odor possibly drain opener to cut sludge build up.But not at same time.Hope this helps..
