Should I be able to set my AC thermostat to 80 degrees with no problem?

I have my thermostat on 78-80 degrees and the AC can't really handle it. It stays on all day trying to cool the apartment. And it's a small apartment. During the night, the AC does much better. It comes on and shuts off as it should, but even then it seems like it might be working too hard. I live in Memphis, TN. The average temperature this week is a high of 93 and low of 74.

It should be working better than this, right?

  1. According to what type of AC you have, If small window unit it is probably maxed out. If this is problem just install a higher BTU AC. If it is central unit, clean or have cleaned the evaporator coils and condenser coils. If this does not help call a service man and have freon checked...

  2. Yes-You should be able to get at least 20 degrees below outdoor temp. even during the day.

  3. It could be several things. First is that the freon is low. Your compressor is worn. The air flow through your evaporator coil and the fins are clogged. The fan is very weak. One thing you can do easily is to clean and vacuum the interior thoroughly.
