  1. If the driveshaft is out or in is irrelevant.

The only time a clutch is "needed" is taking off from a dead start.

After that if you rpm's are correct for your road speed the transmission will shift effortlessly.

Most people don't know how to do this or can't so it is customary for them to use the clutch for every shift to compensate for the error in timing.

Professional drivers never touch the clutch after starting out.

  2. With the engine off there is no problem at all changing gears with out the clutch. With the drive shaft out even makes it easier to shift. With the engine running and the drive shaft in you will have to use the clutch to take off from a stop. The clutch is used to disengage the engine from the rest of the drive line so you don't grind the gears. I use my clutch like one of the other guys said to take off and most of the rest of the time I adjust my engine rpm to match up to the next gear. THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR SWAP. Good luck.

  3. a manual transmission may randomly have the gears aligned so that the gears may engage without the clutch if the engine is not turning, after all they should be synchronized.

  4. No. You may have the occasional time when it happens, but it's considered a bad idea to keep doing it. You can s***w up your synchro's that way.
