Question:

Should I be home schooled online?

Okay, so I am going into high school as a sophomore. My family moves a lot and I don't want it to affect my high school. I'm also not a very social person and I do really good in school. And I have really big plans for my future because I most likely will become an astronomer. When I'm at public school, I feel like I'm not really learning anything much. For example, in English, I write down the vocabulary, define it and put it in a sentence. Then a week later, I'll forget it easily. But I actually want to learn in school. Even though I get good grades, I still feel like I haven't learned much from school. What is it like to be home schooled online. Is it worth being home schooled? Does anyone know a good site? And my mom and dad doesn't know a lot of English and works everyday, so is it okay if they aren't involve in anything with my lessons? Thanks! =)

  1. First of all, your parents need to be involved because your schooling is their responsibility, even if they don't actually sit with you and teach you everything.  They will also have to pay for it.

It's good that you want to actually learn something -- so many kids don't care -- and it's also good that you want to avoid the drugs and behaviors that are not so beneficial.  Just for these reasons, IMO, homeschooling is "worth it".

In my opinion, I don't think that being on the computer all day for all subjects is the best.  And if the computer crashes, you can't do school at all.

There are many online and correspondence schools.  Do your research!

    www.JeffersonHighSchoolOnline.com

and tons more... different books, different prices, different structure, a lot to choose from

    Good luck!

  2. I completely recommend online schooling, I did it for my last two years of high school and it worked out great! The best part is you (usually) can test out of courses if you know them and move on the more advanced stuff.  Try iQ Academies if available in your area, they send you a computer (top of the line mac or dell), a check for internet every month, they provide all the books and excellent teacher support.  There's even a weekly (or bi-weekly) online classroom where you can ask questions, present your work to your teacher or classmates to critique, and you can watch the teacher write out problems on an online "blackboard".  They get five stars in my book.

  3. It sounds like you are a great candidate for homeschooling.  Your mom and dad don't actually have to teach you at this age.  You can do much of your work independently and they'll just be responsible for making sure you stay on track.

Here's some information about computer based homeschooling, along with a list of different companies you can look into:

You could also consider using a virtual school:

It sounds like you have some great goals.  Good luck!

  4. I think you should give it a try!  For online schooling, you'll have assigned teachers, so you parents basically just mentor you and keep you on track.

Some states have public online schools, which are free.

Here are some great options for private (you pay) online high schools:

  5. I don't know about you but highschool should be a great experience...friends mostly.

But then you say your school is half druggies and stuff...so...I know that kind of environment. It's uncomfortable and you just want to stay at home.

It's a personal choice, up to you.

If you're living for the future as an astronomer and have big plans and a striving student, it's better off getting a tutor or something like that. Goodluck
