Hi, I'm 13 years old and I am doing an independent study program for middle school right now. However, I think that it is really structured, and I would like to just do home schooling on my own if I do it for high school.

Here are my three choices:

1. I can go to the public high school with all of my friends. The highlight of this option is that I tested into this gifted program for my city, and I scored in the 99th percentile. This means that my social studies and English classes would be limited to other kids who tested the same. I also would like to go there because all of my friends are doing that.

2. I can go to a private school called Bishop's, which has a very rigorous curriculum and selects only specific kinds of students to go to the school. The problem is that it is very expensive, and I would be taking the money out of my college fund, which is not extremely full. However, if my mom gets a job there (which she has been trying to do for a couple of years), AND I get a

  1. If you share with us where you live (or you can email me privately), we can maybe help you out in finding groups. How did you search for them? Have you tried searches for

    yourstate homeschool association

    yourstate homeschool group

    yourcounty homeschool

    yourcity homeschool   ?

And you should try these on the web as well as in Yahoo Groups. Honestly, though, you don't need to know other homeschoolers to have friends and be social. Sure, most kids will be in school during the day, but you'll have time to do evening and weekend activities, you could volunteer and get going on some valuable stuff for your resume.

You're going to have to sit down and figure out what you want from your high school years--educationally, socially, financially, etc.--and what will benefit you most in the long run. Then compare that to your options. Homeschooling could be a great option for you in terms of planning your own way, going as in-depth as you want, going your own pace, etc., but it'll be the right thing if it matches up with what you want.

  2. You seem really intelligent, so homeschooling doesn't seem like it would be a problem. If you'd like to do that, nothing's stopping you. I love homeschooling way better than high school. However, when I was in a public high school, I was taking advanced courses with my friends just like you. I enjoyed that a lot and I think you should probably give it a try before you decide homeschooling or private school is the best option.

  3. I don't think you should count on a scholarship to the private school -- it sounded like there are a lot of "ifs" there.  I'd talk to your high school counselor about your options, and there's usually a homeschooling alliance in most areas that you can ask for advice as well.  If you can't find them, ask your local library and they may be able to track them down.

Listen to both sides, and then talk it over with your family to make the best decision for your situation.

  4. depends on what you want to do. I'd personally prefer option #1, especially if yor school is racially diverse. i hear schools and jobs like that :P but home schooling isn't always looked upon as the best...they make think you have had less interaction then you should have but w/e it's your choice ultimately lol...

  5. Yes most def. you should be homechooled. From my personal expierience I think  I have been doing fairly well! you see I did it because of problems with girls and I was to worried about them instead of my work so I got to the low grades of F's. But now I am doing great!!!

      Good Luck,

  6. I home schooled my daughter because in our area, I was not pleased with the moral climate of the high school.

It boils down to two major questions.

    1. How hard are you (yourself, not just your mom) willing to try to make this quest the most successful venture of your life?

    2. Are you willing to start at a community college "early" to jump start your college career? As you know, a high school diploma or GED does not carry the weight it used to. In most places you can start community college at 16 wile still finishing the homeschooling experience.

  7. i go to a public school high school and wish i would've done homeschool because at public school they're always talking like normal teenagers and people in class that actually wants to learn it is hard because a lot of them don't care and im having troubles graduating as it is i have to make up so many credits as it is. the best thing to do is never give up and keep trying no matter what your choice is you can always do homeschooling and go to like a gym or do something so that you can associate with people your own age.

  8. If you do homeschooling right, it works, if not, it stinks. You sound highly motivated, and your mom sounds committed. I waas homeschooled all the way from k-12. After graduation, I won one scholarship, and I am currently on academic scholarship at a private college. Homeschool definently has its pros and cons. I had to take a couple of placement courses before I started College, but if you do well, it doesn't matter. (I passed mine easily) Scholarships are probably the biggest advantage of going to a public or private school, but they are attainable coming out of homeschool. Homeschooling used to be really rare, but it is becoming widely respected, because homeschoolers keep winning awards and scholarships. If you do homeschool, try to find a group of other homeschoolers. There are several in my area. I do feel like being homeschooled prepared me for college life. It taught me self-discipline in my studies, but it can be kind of boring at times. Hope this helps : )

  9. I'm against homeschooling!

  10. 2, best for your future.

  11. Home school. Def.

I've never been to public or private. But I love being home schooled. It's probably a smarter choice. A lot of kids (not me) who are home schooled can graduate before kids in public or private. Also home schoolers when the get to10th grade they can do a dual enrollment. Which means you can get AA degree while still in HS. I'm in 9th so I'm not quite there yet.

  12. Well, I can't answer this question, but I'll tell you this - I am a 13 year old homeschooler and I will be going to public school next year.  I feel like I will do better academically if I am w/ other kids, which will help me make better grades....ending up in a great college.  Good luck, and don't forget to ask the Lord for help in ALL of your problems!

  13. I was home schooled!  my cats name is mittens, his breath smells like cat food!
