Also, what are the benefits of using or not using the VBR method of MP3 ripping?

  1. It all depends on what quality level you want on your MP3 file.  Do you want the audio quality to be as close to the CD quality as possible, then don't use VBR.  

    If you are only listening in semi-noisy environments with cheap headphones, then by all means, use VBR.

    Do you care about the file size?  Do you want to cram 20 more songs into your 4 GB memory?  Then you have to use VBR.
