I was pulled over by a police officer this morning for speeding, he gave me a verbal warning but issued me to go to court because I couldn't show him proper proof of insurance because all of the insurance cards I had where expired!

I lost my renewed proof of insurance and I forgot my wallet, so he found out my license number by calling dispatch or something, so yeah only problem is I don't have a license! I have a drivers permit!!

I couldn't get it sooner because Colorado said my birth certificate wasn't valid so I had to wait, the only problem is I can't afford not to drive! With my two jobs and school and having to play the dad role by picking up my siblings and taking them places I can't stay still!

It's okay with my mom, and the officer said to fax my proof of insurance and my ID to the court instead of going to court. What's the worst that can happen? Am I in trouble? Should I be worried?

  1. Yes, the court will likely catch the mistake. I suggest you leave out the part about your mom letting you drive, she could be ticketed also for permitting an unauthorized person to drive.

  2. You need to go to court, plead not guilty, show the judge your current insurance card. Make sure that your insurance card reveals that you were covered on the date that you were cited. The reason that i say go to court is so that you know that the case has been dismissed and you are not wondering if your letter got there or not.

  3. If you are under the age of 18 depending on what the state regulations are, you might lose driving privileges until you are 18 years old. It will be up to the judge to decide.

  4. I guess it depends. This happened to someone I know and they got a penalty for how long they would have to wait to legally drive again, though I've heard of more mild/serious cases of that kinda thing. I guess it all depends on the nitty gritty.

Good luck, hope it all works out!
