Should I be worried or move my babies dr appointment up?

My 12 week old baby has little white bumps on his bum, it doesn't seem to bother him but it feels very rough to the touch. From everything I have read about diaper rash it doesn't seem like that. the bumps are right between his cheeks, I change him often and use penaten on every change. We are going to the Dr next week, but I'm an anxious new mom!

  1. Call your dr's office.  Likely you'll end up speaking to the nurse practitioner.  Describe it to her, and explain your anxiety.  She'll should let you know if it's something they'd like to see right away or not.  Don't let us answer this one for you.  =)

  2. Just move the appt up b/c it will make you feel better.  If you've been creaming his bum then diaper rash usually goes away so let your doc know you've been treating it for x # of days and it looks worse and he'll probably want too see you sooner.

Baby may be allergic to the wipes you're using and try using some different ointment.  My boy had white bumps there too and they just kind of went away after a month of me freaking out and the doc saying just put cream on it.  The best cream was Dr Smith's Diaper Ointment for me.  You can buy it over the counter but my doc wrote me a prescrition b/c my insurance paid for it.

I doubt it is a muluscum (sp?) or anything though b/c that is a very difficult spot to get it.  Does he have sensitive skin?  Do you have dye/perfume free detergent.  He may have sensitive skin down there and the towel after the bath may be too much.  There's a million things it could be and 99.99% of them are nothing to worry about.  If your child has no other syptoms try not to worry (easier said than done), but move the dr appt up.

If the doc can't see you for some reason, he probably has a nurse's line that can give you some advice.

Also, check with your insurance company.  For my baby's first 6 months if the doc office was closed (after hours or weekend) I could take my baby to hospital ER and pay a similar copay.  However, do NOT do this unless you are really freaking out, b/c hospitals have mega germs and you don't want the baby getting a cold or something.

Good Luck !!! Try not to worry.  It sounds normal!

  3. It could be a yeast infection. My son kept getting one and the doctor said some people are more susceptible to it. Don't put powder on him (unless it is cornstarch free) and try putting some hydro cortisone  on and see if that helps. If not, take him in.

  4. Call the doc, that's what they're there for, they will tell you if you should go in, but my daughter had something like that he told me to keep her diaper off as much as possible , to let the air in until it went away, but still call your doctor, because he did look at her first. Good Luck!
