Question:

Should I be worried that my german shepherd's ears are not up yet?

I have a 6 month old german shepherd and his ears still aren't up...I know that it takes time for them to stand up on their own and about 2 months ago they seemed like they were going up but now they are just flopped over to the side. Sometimes they stand up (like when he is paying close attention to something) but other then that they are flopped over on the side. Should I contact my vet and have them taped or wait it out for another month or so?

  1. Just wait for a while ever dog is different it might take him longer for his ears to go up.

  2. Some german shepherds ears just dont go up

my german shepherd kiya's never went up

some say its because to many people petted their ears to hard when they were young

  3. German Shepherd Dog ears can come up anywhere between 8 weeks and 6 months of age. When ears are taped at 7 or 8 months of age, there is very little chance of it working. Once a GSD puppy is done teething, his ears should remain fixed in whatever position they are in. If they're up, they should stay up. If they're down, chances are they will stay down. More often than not, the ears will come up on their own so no, I don't believe this should be cause for alarm. Every dog is different and every dog matures at their own rate.

You can certainly try taping, but I highly doubt it will be worth it. It may work, it may not. In the long run, love your dog for what he is, not what you wish he could be.

If I can help in any way, feel free to e-mail me

  4. All Shepard's are different. My dog's stood up at 6 months, so you still have some time.

  5. no it isnt a problem... i have a shetland sheepdog and he is 2 years old in a month... and there breeds ears are supposed to be bent over at the tip.. and his stick up like a mule!!  Sometimes it just dosnt happen.. also the dog could be too young.. and NO dont get your dogs ears cropped so what if he isnt perfect.. love him for him.

  6. Every dog is different, your dog's ears will go up at any time and it is nothing to worry about. Some german shepherd's ears may never go up and i've even seen some german shepherds have one ear up and one ear flopped. If you really want them to stand up then tape them up. good luck!

  7. We always had shepards when I was growing up. My dad would clip a clothespin to the droopy ear and after awhile-days-he'd take it off and the ear would stand up. I don't know if it really was the pin or just the ear. Sounds cruel now that I think about it.

  8. You still have some time.  Dogs with especially heavy ears, like my Shep's, take longer.  Does your dog have heavy ear leather?

Also, ears tend to fall again when the puppy is teething.  This is probably why they seemed to almost come up, then fall over again.

I wouldn't stress about this too much.  Stay in contact with your breeder and try not to worry.  :)

  9. Nothing to worry about, my dog Duke is also a german shepherd and his ears went up when he turned about a year old. He's three now and there's been no problems. :) good luck :)

  10. My shep's ears started to go up at 6 months - 1 was up and the other was down. People asked "whats wrong with her ears?"

Shes 2 now and everything fine :)

  11. is he done teething?

if so, tape them. if not, wait.

does your breeder have a history of dogs ears not standing? or did they all stand from every litter?
