  1. Assume nothing.  If you want to pursue a job as a professional driver, I recommend you look into driving buses, either long-haul or inner-city.  Both are getting way more play than they used to now that it's getting more expensive to keep the family hoopy on the road.

    Trucking is getting pretty expensive too, and as a result more freight is getting shipped via train.  I wouldn't look too hard there unless you've found a company that looks pretty solid and has a good deal on fuel.

    If you try to get into it as an owner-operator, be really sure what your fuel costs are, or else you'll send all your profits out through the exhaust pipe.
