Should I bring my instrument the first day of highschool?

i have a clarinet. I don't want to waste my time bringing it back and fourth the first day if the director is just going to talk.

ya really dont they wont make a big deal since its the first day and it wouldnt be cool to bring an instrument the first day/

HI Sally,

  If you don't want to lug it... don't lug it on the first day.   I cannot even imagine the director is going to want to hand out concert material.  You don't mention what grade you are in...

Now if you are in high school... and in the marching band... you just might need it.  But if you are in Jr Hi.   I would wait for instructions.

I am a Mom of HS students.  I think it's interesting you asked this question.  This is something I would have worried to death about in HS. Leave it home. If it turns out, you should have brought it, tell them you had a lot of new supplies to carry, you will bring in the next day. Good question.

Don't take it the first day unless they told you to.

Do you have a locker?

You might feel like a fool in front of classmates, toting an instrument on Day 1 - but aren't you going to feel worse if you get there and you're the only one without an instrument?  (Which group would you rather feel stupid in front of?  That's the worst case scenario.)

Do you know anyone else who plays an instrument at the school, someone who went there last year and knows the teacher?  If you could ask them, and trust their answer, that would be the best choice.

And remember that most people will tend to take you the way you take yourself.  If you are sure of yourself, most people won't notice the small stuff.  If they do, just make eye contact, give a quirky smile, and stare them down.  Chances are they will back off.
