  1. Your room is about the same size as mine. Go with as much as your budget will allow and plan for expansion and upgrades. I purchased a receiver with 9.1 capability, incorporated in-wall ceiling speakers as the 6th and 7th ch, due to room size consideration, and eventually added on di-poles as the 8 and 9th channel, (presence speakers ), after the fact. I'm glad I had the versatility to do this as as the technology evolved, especially as fast as the audio world is now moving. In addition that 6th and 7th rear ch can be amazing and the cost isn't that much more. I purchased a Pioneer pdp 5010. Below is a guide for viewing distances.

    Screen size Viewing distance

    30"                3.75-6.25 feet

    34"               4.25-7 feet

    42"                5.25-8.75 feet

    50"                6.25-10.5 feet

    56"                7-11.75 feet

    62"                7.75-13 feet

    70"                8.75-14.75 feet

  2. In my experience, a 5.1 system is a better choice for almost any domestic environment, including yours, (based on the dimensions).

This will give you easier setup, and allow you to get better speakers for your budget, as you won't have to spread it so thin.  The easier setup is an important factor as well - as it's frankly easier to make a system sound worse rather than better when adding extra speakers.  Keep it simple, and get more bang for your buck!

  3. Addressing the sound system, I would go with 5.1. Few movies support 7.1 at the moment. 7.1 systems generally cost more as well. I would invest in a high quality 5.1 system, such as one from Klipsch of Bose.

  4. ultimately the decision for 5.1 vs 7.1 will be decided based on how well the room sounds to you. however 7.1 does add the presence of a second set of surround speakers that can really bring a movie to life. your room is long and narrow. how is the seating going to be set up. 1 row, 2rows or more. speaker placement becomes a factor depending on how may rows of seat you use. always remember the most important component in your system will be your reciever. so pick one that you have had a chance to audition and fits your needs and budget. most of all enjoy the theater
