Should I buy Graphite or Steel Shaft Irons?

I am a beginner level golfer (49 on 9) and I use 21 year old clubs with a steel shaft now. I am looking to buy new irons, and I don't know whether to go with graphite or steel shaft. I am comfortable with a graphite shaft driver, but I am not sure about the irons.

  1. definitely graphite on woods and hybrids but STEEL ON IRONS. there called irons for a reason. just like woods used to be made out of wood, irons were made out of metal. when u use a wood, u sweep and aren't suppose to turn up any turf but u dig into the ground a little with an iron. graphite shafts are obviously less durable and more likely to break than steel shafts. so if u get graphite shafted irons there's a good chance ull break them.

  2. I would sugest graphite irons unless your clubhead speed exceeds 100 mph. If not, the lighter graphite shaft will allow you to hit the ball higher and straighter.

  3. only you can answer that question....do what ever makes you happy!!!

  4. I recommend graphite.

As you are beginner, graphite is lighter and easier to control.

When you feel you can swing steel easily, then change

  5. BRAND NEW NICKENT 3DX GOLF 9 PIECE GRAPHITE IRON SET

    cost about $229.99

  6. Stick with steel shafted irons for now, the graphite will be too light for you and will cause you problems.  Graphite woods are fine though.

  7. i would say steel. for me it doesn't flex the shaft as much which helps me hit straight every time.  i have a driver that has a graphite shaft which helps my game tremendously. but for the irons i would definately go steel.

  8. how far do you drive?  what is your 150 club?  how violent is your swing?

Also try hitting both graphite and steel.  both have different feelings.

  9. Beyond all of the wives tales about Graphite shafts being so much more ...fragile...than steel.  You have to buy what you like the best and what you hit the best.  I am a 2 handicap and I own both steel shafted Irons and Graphite shafted Irons.....I hit both equally well and my 9 Iron is a 150 club.   Go with what you want

  10. I agree with Matt C. I owned both steel shafted and graphite shafted irons (Callaway BB 06 Graphite and Taylor Made R7 Draw Steel). My club head speed is 75 to 80 mph. I switch to steel to graphite because i gain yards at least 15 to 20 yards more. My 9 iron (graphite) is a 150 club and my 7 iron in steel shafted. So my advice is to try both and see which one is best suited for you.

  11. Try a few different brands of clubs with a graphite and steel shaft and just see which one feels best and performs best for you and go with that.

    Have a good one...
