Should I buy a 2003 Saturn ION or a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta?

Should I buy a 2003 Saturn ION or a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta? The ION is selling for roughly $10,000 and the Jetta for around $12,000. Both are used and in about the same condition. Which one should I get, and why?

Both nice cars, problem with the Jetta, very expensive to fix out of warranty.

Only way to get a VW is to buy new to have a warranty.

The ion because it costs much less to repair then the jetta and the ion has a very small advantage in mpg with 25 city and 33 highway mpg while the jetta has 24 city and 31 highway mpg. The jetta might last a little longer though.
