I currently drive a 96 neon.

New car (looking at 08 Sentra or Mazda3). Should I get a new car with all of the warranties. Also, I would be able to get a good deal on the Sentra.

-or-

Used car....They are usually cheaper, but isn't the manufacturer warranty usually expired after roughly 3yr/36000miles. I would be looking for a car 2-3years old under 30k miles. You dont always know what your getting also.

Should I get a new or used car?

  1. It depends on a few things. One if you buy a new car as soon as it goes off the lot you will be upside down with it in terms of depreciation and what you owe if you pay no money down. Used cars can have problems and that can be expensive. If you shop around and find a good price on a well maintained used car you are better off.

One thing you may also want to consider if you are going to finance a new or used car it is my experience that new cars have a lower interest rate and possibly a longer term meaning a little lower payment. While used cars normally dont get as long of a term and most banks have a higher interest rate on them.

If I was able to buy a used car over a new one I would simply due to if I ever wanted to sell it I could without loosing as much money.

  2. I would opt for a brand-new car especially if I can get a good deal with it. As for the used car, if that car is owned by somebody I know closely then it's fine with me. But not when my fate is at the mercy of salespeople.

  3. well with gas prices the way they are and with not knowing which type of fuel will be available i think i would go with a new car one that burned gas and e85 and i would want the longest warranty avaible which i think is dodge or jeep they have an unlimited drive train warranty and they have some that will burn the new e85 flex fuel i dont like hybrids because the batterys in 3 yrs will have to be replace and that could cost thousands

  4. Never buy a used car from a used car dealer.  MSNBC had a news story on where is the best places to buy used cars. The used car dealers were on the BOTTOM of the list. They are pros at negotiations (and you and I are rank amateurs), they are pros at hiding problems on their cars, etc.

The private sales (newspaper, etc.) were the best places. The seller will not tell you all the problems, but they don't know how to hide them.

And a private seller are at MOST they are equal in negotiation skills to you and me.

You only buy a NEW car if you plan on buying and holding it for a LONG time.  Then you squeeze every little penny's value out of that car.

Of course then there are people who buy a new car, run it without any maintenance then sell it and get another new car (when the warranty runs out).  That is just expensive way to live (and undependable form of transportation).

My 2000 Audi A4 (65K miles) and 94 Civic (187K miles) both runs like new. And they are also rock solid too.

    Good Luck...

  5. Depending on where you are, get a used rental car, Japanese model. Good deals, amybe a few dings and scratches. I bought a 91 Geo Prizm in 92, drove it until some ^&%$ creamed me in Alaska in 2000.

If not, I would still go used with low miles, and again Japanese.

  6. I think - you should also compare insurance quotes for these cars before buying one, for example here: http://autoinsurance.maclenet.com

As I rememer financed cars is more expensive to insure cause it requires full coverage.
