It seems the sound card on my tv has gone out, as the speakers do not work no matter what I do. I am trying to connect my 5.1 pc speakers to the tv, xbox 360, or dvd player using a stereo jack to rca converter and I have done so unsuccessfully. My question is, should I just buy a reciever for a quick fix? I do not want to buy a home theater system because my room is too small for another set of speakers, would a reciever work to fix this?

  1. A receiver would work for this, there should be a way to connect your pc speakers to it if there is an optical or coax input on the back of the pc speakers/subwoofer, or if you are using the stereo jacks just get an adapter where the mini-jack plugs into and splits into 2 left and right RCA plugs that will connect to the receiver's outputs.

  2. If you use a cable box or satellite receiver, take the sound from the red & white RCA jacks and feed that to your PC speaker inputs.  If you have analog cable service with no cable box or take TV off the air, then you may or may not be able to get audio from your TV depending on what has failed.  If you have line level outputs upstream from the audio power amplifier, that might work.  If the failure is in the audio demodulator, you are out of luck.

  3. Your 5.1 speakers need to be connected to a receiver or a surround sound decoder.  That box should have various audio inputs, including stereo via mini-plug or RCA, and optical audio and/or digital coax for surround sound.  If you don't have such a thing, then yes, you'll need a receiver.

I wouldn't bother getting one from the store, just go to ebay or craigslist and get an old 5.1 there for cheap.
