Try both. Buy a card and make a deal with your phone company for  your vacation time.

If I were you ... well if I were you I wouldn't take my phone on vacation, but regardless you should definitely contact your cell phone company.  You should be able to do an international calling plan for just one month, or however long your trip will be.  That way you would have the convenience of the same phone number and a cell phone, along with the cost not being prohibitive.  Good luck and have a good trip.

Talk first to your cell phone company and try to get a 2 week deal for international calls (roaming?) if not possible just buy call cards here in the hotel and it will be cheaper than from your hotel room.
