  1. Buy it in Rome.  I found that it was cheaper to buy them at the Termini.  There are lines if you have questions and need to speak to someone, but the kiosk machine to buy them is really easy to use.  Just make sure that you buy them about a day ahead of time.  When my husband and I were there in May we bought them the day of and had seats together on the Eurostar (pay the extra money for the Eurostar, it's a lot quicker), when we changed our tickets the day of we were not seated together.

  2. If you know which train you want to travel on then booking in advance would save you time queuing at the railway station in Rome, otherwise wait until you get there.

  4. i would get it before, you never know when they could run out. and or when the next train will be there.

  5. I would buy it in Rome. If there is a queue at the desk you can always buy it at the automatic vending machines.

If you have an internet connection you can actually book and pay  your ticket online and collect it at the vending machine just by typing in your code.

have a look  under http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html: It is the english version of the railway website which is quite handy.
