Question:

Should I buy or lease?

I am almost 14 years old and I really want to get a horse. I have been taking lessons for almost a year now and can walk, trot, canter, turn, and, side pass ext. and am going to start training to barrel race that is when I get a horse of my own. My question is should I buy or should I lease first. The only problem with leasing is i would have to find a lease that would let me stay the same barn and let me race their horse. I personally think it would be easier to buy. So what should I do?

  1. lease

  2. I'm around your age and i've been riding for about 4 years.

I'd love to buy a horse, but with gas prices and vet bills. my mom and I both lease a horse.

i actually have to lease him at one barn and take lessons at another.

it's not as hard as you think, but you just have to be sure to have very good relationships with both trainers.

    good luck!

  3. lease firt because you can see what you spend on a horse and you learn how to take care of a horse but if you know all that buy but if you dont lease

  4. I totally agree with clbling!  I would lease first because I cannot tell you how many girls your age have ridden for a few years then needed to get out of it due to going away to college etc.  Plus, if you buy and the market continues to decline you may not even be able to give the horse away let alone sell it for what you paid for it!!

I also have to say that although you have been taking lessons for a year, you still have a lot to learn.  I would look into a lease before you buy!!

  5. HAHAHA!!!!

    Like I said before lease.

You'll get an idea on what it is like to own a horse. And an idea on how expensive it is....so ya.

  6. if you have the money buy your own horse the n you can do whatever with it (show or race or wateva) otherwise see if any1 at ur riding school or barn is leasing a horse so you could stay there

  7. i think that if you can afford it you should buy, but if you aren't sure just lease a horse and see if you like it, sometimes you can buy the horse that you lease.

  8. Since you only have around 1 year of experience leasing would be best. I am almost 13 and have been riding since i was 2. you never know you may not want a horse of your own and if you buy it then the horse suffers and you waste  money. Keep taking lessons and begin leasing but if i were you i wouldn't buy right now plus the expenses are REALLY high right now.

  9. 14!  Going into high school I presume.  Honey, lease.  You are embarking on a transition that you may find out, you don't have the time for horses you once thought you would.  It is a great learning time too.  You can lease different horses and take this time to learn.  Some will want to lease first just to make sure you are going to be a good owner for their beloved and then offer an option to buy.  Being a horseman isn't just about riding. The market is so bad in the horse community right now as well.  People are willing to lease their horses for free just so they don't have to feed them.  At least here in California.  $15-$18 a bale.  Uugh!  Just feeding them is an investment.  Save that money for college.

  10. lease with the view to buy. as this means that you can have the horse for a while and see if you can afford it and have the time. if you jump in and buy a horse especially when you havent been riding for very long, you could also have an agreement when you loan for a while on one yard so the owner can see if the hrose is ok with you and you will be capable and then they may let you move it.

i would lease though at the moment especially with the market being a bit rubbish, if you want to sell later you may be stuck.

  11. If you have the money, buy, but you need lots of stuff, same with lease, but see if your local riding school will let your lease a horse, or buy a horse and pay rent for it at your local riding school. You may have to muck out stables for my last one, offer, and you might just be lucky

  12. i suggest leasing first BUT if you want to buy and it really is your choice.... get atleast a 3 week trial... if he owner says no they have a reason... and i dont mean their personal status i mean theres a problem with the horse... anyone should say yes if theres something signed =] ive been through it all so yeah....

    good luck =]

  13. well i think if you never owned a horse before you should lease. i think you get a better idea of what it is like to own a horse and what kind of horse you want. and if you don't like the horse you don't have to lease him again. then you could get a different horse or breed. i got my horse with out leasing before. i think that was one of the worst thinks i ever did. now i wish i did lease. i don't like the breed or her temperament. so i think you should always lease before you buy. Oh i am 13 years old. so i know what you are going though.
