Should I buy "refurbished" or "recertified" laptop computer from Buy.com, CompUSA, BestBuy etc.. ? ?

It depends on who did the refurb- the manufacturer or a third party.  If you have a brick and mortar best buy close, go with them, CompUSA is gone except on the web, same as Buy.com, with the web site guys you my get a better price, but you also have to ship out your computer, at least best buy has some sort of help in the store.  The extended warranties can be good depending on what they cover, a lot of times the screen is not covered, or the hinges, which are what break the most
