Should I buy the iPhone 3G?

Well, friends, I live in India. Tomorrow the iPhone 3G is going to be launched here by Bharti Airtel. The 8 GB model that I crave to purchase will cost here Rs. 31,000 or $784 i.e. about 4 times the price in USA. I surely love the iPhone but now after price announcement today by Airtel, it seems unaffordable to me. It is really sick for Airtel to price it 4 times costlier. Now, what should I do? Will it be really worth the huge amount of money?

Contrary to what one of the responders wrote, the iPhone supports Bluetooth (see full specs at http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html).

Your price calculation is quite off the mark: you have to look at the cost of owning an iPhone over two years (the length of a US contract). You will find that after taking monthly charges into account, the costs in India and the US are approximately the same (about $2000 or Rs. 80,000, give or take Rs. 10,000 depending on the model you pick and your actual monthly bill). The difference between India and the US is that in the US you pay a little up front and a lot every month - in India it's the reverse.

Having said all that - iPhone 3g is currently suffering from many reported problems, probably having to do with an inadequate testing procedure (lengthy computer sync times and poor reception being the most notable ones). In addition and despite its name - there is no 3g in India, you will be using Edge which sucks terribly, unless you are somewhere around a WiFi point. iPhone location facilities probably will also be very poor - the iPhone's GPS is notoriously fickle and WiFi location facilities will not work in India.

Personally, I would wait at least until December. By then some of the aforementioned problems will likely be solved by firmware updates and as others have mentioned - after the initial craze, prices may come to something more reasonable (Rs. 20,000 for the 8gb and Rs. 25,000 for the 16gb would have made a bit more sense in my opinion).

31,000/- for that idiotic phone and no bluetooth and video capturing. WOW is there any idiot buying that phone..

if u can spend that much amount wait for NOKIA N96...16 GB memory,5mp camera and mem expandable upto 24 GB. It must be priced at 33000 /- .

This site offers a free iPhone! It sounds like a scam but it really isn't, I got mine in the mail the other day. Just thought I'd share it with you :)

I think you must wait till october-november. Google is also lauching iphone in the mid of october. Price will go down surely.
