Question:

Should I buy twin tip skis?

I just bought some telemark skis this past season but am looking to enter the world of twin tips. I am not looking to do bug jumps landing switch but initially riding backwards and then doing small 180 switch landings. Could I get away with doing this without twin tips, or would I need a second pair. Btw, I have Black Diamond Ethic skis right now.

  1. I would look for a low priced new or used ski to start with and see how much you like it first. Once you decide that twin tip is the way to go, then invest in a pricier set and sell the others for what you paid for them or keep them for early and late season skiing when the rocks are peeking through. Good luck.

  2. Twins are good for more than just the park or riding switch. They can be a great all mountain ski, they are outstanding in powder, and they can carve like nothing else.

If you are just doing small little 180s, then I suggest that you stick with what you have, and as you become more comfortable with what you are doing, then make the switch to twins. They can easily serve as your only set of skis if you get the right pair.

  3. Yeah you could get away without twin tips but it will be easier and smoother tricks with twin tips.

  4. I love my twins.

Besides being good for tricks and such they are also really nice for all-mountain skiing. They are great in powder and I personally really like the flexible tail in moguls.

As for riding switch, that's really pretty easy to do without twin tips as long as your skis aren't old ones that have the tail almost flat to the ground. However, you'd really probably want them for 180s as they are a lot more forgiving on the landing. Partially because they are more flexible, but mainly because you can come in at a sharper angle without digging in your tails and flipping over backwards. This is especially true when you start going off of bigger jumps or if you venture into the halfpipe.

Could you get away with riding non-twin tips? Yes, you certainly could... but I would highly advise you to give them a try (perhaps just rent them from a local shop first to give it a try). They are just all-around really fun skis.
