Question:

Should I call a plumber?

I have a leaking faucet that has been slowly falling apart for 2 years. I finally broke down and bought a new faucet, but am now getting cold feet over installing it. I will have to turn the water off to the whole house if I do, and if something goes wrong, I don't want to have to call a plumber at 7 pm and pay a million dollars. I have found lots of articles on the internet about how to fix faucet handles, but nothing about removing and replacing the whole assembly. I can look at it and see sort of how it works, but it doesn't seem to have a replacement faucet nipple, and I'm afraid mine will fall apart. any advice on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

  1. chances are that the plumbing to your tub faucets are made of copper and not cpvc.  a much harder thing to change.  changing the whole assembly is a pain and can be time consuming.  would part of the bath wall need to come out to replace the faucets?  what type of walls are they?  tile?  unfortunately, i recommend the plumber next week during the day.  if it's waited 2 years, it can wait another week.  he'll be in and out in an hour, if all goes well, and you know it will be done properly.

  2. there should be shutoff valves for the hot and cold water lines under the sink.Caution if you want to takle a faucet replacement i recommend having a basin wrench or you just wont get it tight enough and it will always wiggle.i charge 75 dollars to replace faucets as a licensed plumber is it really worth your time to figure it out

  3. I hope the one u bought is not a cheapie from Home Depot. A plumber can do  the change for about a hundred dollars. Just call one up and ask what he charges Then its done right  and no more problems

  4. There should be shut off valve under the sink.....So you don't have to shut off the whole house......But if you don't have a shut off valve under the sink you should.....To install the faucet you need to get a basin wrench. You should read up on it before you try to tackle the job yourself........Info available at your local Library or on line...

Then you are going to have to shut off the water to the house. You can shut it off at the meter but you are going to need a water meter key to shut it off or you can look for a shut off valve at the house somewhere, you'll have to look for it.....

But if you get a plumber I suggest you have him put shut off valves under the sink so next time something like this happens it'll be easier.....

  5. There are suppose to be stop valves under the sink.If not they should be added so you won't have to turn off the whole house. Its pretty straight forward(though you are basically standing on your head while doing it.Be sure and wear goggles as rust will fall in your eyes.Just turn off water/take feeder tube off then take hold down nut off(these are usually rusty) then lift out old faucet.Loosening the feeder tube is a pain but a faucet/basin wrench makes it easier(though a small wrench can sometimes be used) Or call around for bids/times. Or get your BF/hubby  to do it.Oh ,its the tub they are much easier to change just undo the nipple s ring nut and shower pipe .(you must access this from the other side of the wall it is on) after you have taken all the dress up hardware off and remove.

  6. I am a plumber and I can tell you there should be valves under the sink, But sometimes they dont work. I would suggest you call a pro this way he has what he needs and it will save you more time and money if he does the job. There are 2 reasons

1 If you break anything now you have to wait for a plumber

2 If you do it and need something it will cost you to go back and forth there fore someone who knows how to do the job will be in and out and you can do other more important things

p.s sometimes the nuts are too rusty and you need to cut the faucet off

In short the 100 dollars is always worth the sanity   GOOD LUCK!
