Question:

Should I call employer after the interview?

Had an interview one week ago. I didn't think I did all that well. The interviewer sent inconsistent messages. At one point she said they thought they already had a candidate, but that they were trying to get a few more positions opened up and that they would definitely call me if there were more positions. But at the end of the interview, I said "So, I should call you in a week?" and she said you can call, we should know by then if we have new positions. I don't want to look like a fool. I feel like if they have a position and they want me, that THEY should call ME. What do you think?

  1. I wouldn't call. Like you said, they'll likely contact you if they feel you're right for the position. But, it doesn't hurt to send a thank you e-mail or card. This keeps your name fresh in their mind, and it shows initiative.

  2. If you're interested then yes you should follow up, what's the worst that could happen? And at the best, they do have new positions.

It's now too late for this but anytime you have an interview, send a thank you within a day of the interview. Just thank them for their time and let them know you look forward to hearing from them. I knew an office where the interviewer wanted to proceed to the next step with a candidate and only would if the candidate sent a thank you note.

  3. Show the prospective employer that you are truly interested in working for the company.  In addition, to calling them, it is customary to send a thank you note after your interview.  Even though it has been a week since your interview, I still would send out the thank you note.  In the future, when you get back from and interview, send out a thank you note.

In addition, make sure you are prepared for the interview.  You need to know the history of the company you are interviewing for.  You need to ask questions as well, do not let the interviewer ask all of the questions, this shows that you are well educated and are very interested in making a career being employed with the company.

If you do not have experience, in writing thank you notes, send me an email and I would be more than happy to provide you with a template that you can customize each time you send out a thank you note.  Also, do you have a resume?  Does the resume match the type of jobs you are applying for?  If you are mailing your resume out, do you send a cover letter with it?

I can provide you with some scenario questions that you can ask during a job interview, that will work during any interview.

    Best wishes.

  4. Be proactive. It's normal to call and follow-up with an interviewer if you haven't been contacted. You should also ask what you could do better next time if they did not pick you.
