Question:

Should I carry my parakeet around with me? Or let him stay in one spot?

Hey! Thanks to those who helped me out with my last question, my parakeet is more comfortable now and I've started finger training him.

But here's my situation now. ""Is it better to carry my parakeet around in his cage with me so he's always with me? Or is it better to just let his cage stay in one spot? (In my room)""

  1. A good compromise is to have a second cage or play stand for your bird.  If you have an open play stand, you'll have to teach him to remain on the stand and not wander off (which is hard and takes a LOT of consistency).  If you aren't up to that, consider a second cage placed in an area you frequent a lot (like the living room or den where you watch television or use the computer).

A second cage or play stand will give your bird a change of scenery and the opportunity to be with you safely but still allow him to be returned to his "home" cage.  For birds that tend to be territorial over or possessive of their cages, multiple cages often help.

Good luck!  And thanks for thinking of your bird's enjoyment too!

  2. oh my god. Carry the cage with you o my god you want your keet to have an heart attack. How old are you. My God some people should not have pets. I just seized one parakeet from a friend cause she didnt know how to take care of him and i wish i could do the same with yours

  3. I would put his cage in the most active part of the house, but not the kitchen.

This way he will feel more included with the rest of the family and no what is going on. For the first two weeks, we kept my sun conure  in my bedroom. Then we tried moving her cage in the living room where we are most often. She feels more included, and enjoys watching tv with us.

If you place the cage in the most active part of the house, you won't have to carry her around all the time.

It is good to have her out during the day with you too, though. Just make sure she can be in her cage so she can eat.

For Java's cage, the top opens up and a perch is up there so she likes to walk around her cage and play with the outside of it and not always be inside. We have this top open for most of the day unless no one is home.

    I hope that I helped! :)

  4. you can take your parakeet everywhere in your house just make sure his/her wings are clipped so she/he cant fly to high or to far. and as for the cage you can take it anywhere in the house with you. just make sure you dont spill food or water all over your floor. i did that once my mom got mad. :[ lol.

  5. carrying him around so much will stress him out.

animals can die from too much stress. :[

  6. That depends on what you are doing. If you are cooking to stop him from landing in your hot food or on the hot spot of the oven or stove keep him in the cage, but otherwise he won't need his cage if you are training him to step up, he will want to be with you on your shoulder once he tames up completely. Otherwise it safe to leave his cage in one place so he feels more secure about where he accually lives and his own space is. Moving it around all the time can make him very insecure in the long run making him feel never settled in.

  7. First, you want to keep the cage in one spot. This puts less stress on the bird and helps him familiarize with his surroundings.

Yet, once your new parakeet becomes really attacthed to you and tame, you can try to carry it on your shoulder around the house or in an enclosed area.
