Question:

Should I change my career, 7 days a week is too much!?

Hi, I am a 21 year old male in the UK currently working in IT (sort of) and I also work part time at a Chinese takeaway. I currently earn about £17,000 a year, but I find it exhausting working 7 days a week (46+ hours). I was wondering what sort of jobs I could do and get much better pay? I have A-Levels but no university qualifications. Without wanting to sound arrogant, I think I am a really hard worker and I know that my bosses don't want to see me go. Anyway what you do in my situation? I don't drive BTW!!

  1. Depending on how old you are then you aren't getting paid anywhere near enough.

I also work in IT and do 36 hours a week and earn around double what you're getting, look for another job.

However, if you really like your current job then perhaps you could ask to reduce your hours a bit, money isn't everything after all.  If they don't want to lose you then they may agree to reducing your hours and not reducing your salary (at least not by much).

It also depends on where you are living, if you live in London then you certainly should be getting paid more, but in some areas like Scotland etc, wages tend to be lower.

Jobs in IT tend to be well paid and you don't always need qualifications, experience is more important.  So check some job websites and see if there is anything that you might be suitable for.

Apart from that, jobs in sales can also be well paid if they pay commission.

  2. I would get a better job in IT because that would pay better than your Chinese takeaway job and then quit that job and work less hours.

Or you can just settle down and get to work. Many Americans work far more than 40 hours a week.

  3. well friend, qualification and experience are importance, why don't you take on-line degree program to improve your certificate, so do not need to leave your work, else you can search new and better job. there is a lot of company need hard working employee like you.

    try then

    good luck

  4. Don't become a teacher, then. You will work more hours than you are at the moment and have to take home work to do in the evening and weekends.
