  1. No it's not true, although a repairs between $300 - $500 may be cost prohibitive if it's more than 10 years old.

  2. not always, several factors in play...

    1. how old is the unit?

    2. are there any other problems?

    3. how large is the unit in tons?

A new condensing unit is expensive and installation will be also the charge will probably be at least $1200-$1500. I just priced a two ton condenser replacement and the unit itself was $600 for a 2 ton 13 seer payne unit, and the price of replacement will also be high.

The reversing valve should be considerably cheaper but depends on the contractor.

But to be honest most contractors will try to convince you to change the unit because it can be done faster, make more profit, and maybe depending on situation may actually be the best for you.
