Question:

Should I change my policy date?

I bought a car through a private seller. I incorrectly calculated the taxes, so my budget didn't allow me to register the vehicle last week. The seller is very cool and offered to have his friend {they are both mechanics} hold it for me at his shop, because it would get towed in my complex without tags. It will be held outside b/c there is no room inside.

I contacted my insurance co. b/c I don't want to have to pay an additional $200 this month when my car is not even being used. they say I could changed the policy date for later this month when I know i will be able to register the vehicle. That way my initial deposit would still cover this month. My question now is although it only be a little over two weeks what if something were to happen to my car while it is not covered? I know it seems crazy, but is it worth the risk of changing the coverage date. My friend says area is safe, so I don't need to worry about theft. I'm more concerned about unforseen accidents. Also I live in MD and they are talking about this Tropical Storm Hannah causing strong winds and flooding this coming weekend. I'm from NYC so I don't know too much about these storms and hurricanes out here.

If my car gets damaged will I be up S**** creek? Or will my insurance cover once I reactivate the policy? Please help

  1. They won't cover the car unless the policy is bound by a signature. Are you getting full coverage ins. or just liability?

You are the only one that can answer these questions- is saving 200 bucks worth the risk of you car being vandalized or flooded?
