I am currently running Windows Vista Home Premium.

Its lately been buggy and I am wondering whether it is worth it to change to Linux. Please list some pros and cons and whether it is difficult to install. And most importantly; whether you recommend it or not?!

  1. Yes anything would be better than vista.

  2. Linux rocks windows, but there is a learning curve. Download Debian linux and install it. Have both operating systems installed while you learn to use the wonder that is linux. Need to install an instant messenger?  Just type in "apt-get install gaim" and Debian will download and install it for you. Want to make sure you have the newest version of software? "apt-get update" Just that easy, plus you will not have to worry about tons of spyware and c**p programs beating up your system resources.

  3. Only use Linux if you are professional computer user, because it requires a lot of knowledge in Unix commands.

I suggest you upgrade to XP.

  4. I haven't personally used Linux in a couple of years, but there are many distros, such as the ever-popular Ubuntu, that offer what's called a Live CD (or DVD), which you can boot your computer from and run the OS, in its entirety (with some limits, obviously), without actually installing it. I'd recommend checking a few of those out, at the very least.

  5. Linux is better than windows. it is easy to install, but in beginning u will find it difficult to use. so learn few basic UNIX commands.

after few week's u start loving it, and recommending it to other's.

To read and write MS word document OpenOffice is available. u can use or create  MS Office file with it.

  6. i wouldn't recommend it linux isn't very compatible with programs or anything else for that matter. if your computer is running sluggish i would suggest having some memmory added.

  7. Linux is a lot more stable and faster than windows, but it comes at a price.  You definitely have to learn more commands, and sometimes problems with specific hardware can take some work and research (ie Google).

As for installing, most installations (ie Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu) are fairly easy and do most of the work themselves.  You can also have both windows and linux installed, which is always a good idea because...

While there are alternatives to a lot of Windows software for Linux, there are still situations in which you may need windows, like to read or write MS word documents or power point.  There is a Windows emulator (Wine) for linux, but it is not very good (last time i tried).

Alternatively, you can run most linux distros off a CD, or off a flash drive.  Check out http://www.krewr.net/articles/linux/dist... for the most common distros.
