Question:

Should I choose Alpine Type R 6x9's for my door speakers?

Ok, I just installed an amplifier that puts out 75 watts RMS individually to each of my four door speakers. The fronts are 6x9's and the rears are 6.5 inch rounds. I have heard good things about the Alpine Type R speakers. They are rated at 100 watts RMS. Would I be severely underpowering these speakers by only giving them 75 watts RMS, or must I give them 100 watts RMS to have them sound good? Or am I better off buying something that more closely matches 75 watts RMS? Just so ya know, I am not trying to impress the car next to me with my windows rolled down, I just want it to sound good. I have cheap 50 watt RMS memphis speakers in my Tacoma right now, so I am overpowering and want to get rid of them! Any input is appreciated, thanks! My subwoofer system is already complete, so nevermind that when answering this question.

  1. You'll be fine.  As long as your amplifier has the gains set correctly, you've got nothing to worry about.  The difference between 75 watts and 100 watts in negligable at best.   Finding speakers that are rated different isn't going to make a difference either.  It may even have the opposite effect you're looking for.  My suggestion would be to use 6.5" speakers though instead of 6x9s.  Oval speakers suck.  Don't get too wrapped around the axles with overpowering or underpowering as long as you're in the ballpark.  Less power will not blow a speaker and too much power will only blow a speaker if it's a lot of extra power and especially of the signal is clipped real bad.  So don't sweat the small numbers.  The difference between 75 watts and 100 watts is right around 1db.  You can't even hear that small of a change in amplitude.  Don't sweat it.

  2. id go with the same amp that u already have ..it will be cheaper to do that....just find some speakers like u said with 75 rms a piece...i like pioneer premier subs and speakers, but mb quart and kl audio have really nice sq speakers too....it depends on how much money u want to spend....good luck

  3. I have Alpine Type-R 6-1\2s on my boat and they sound excellent. I tested Kenwood, Sony, Pioneer and bunch more and I chose the Alpines because I liked the clarity and mid bass response. Alpine and Focal are the two companies I prefer most when it comes to smaller speakers like 6x9s and 6-1\2s.

My Type-Rs are powered by my Alpine head unit that makes 45w RMS and they get very loud so 75w RMS will be plenty. The speakers 100watt rms rating is for full range, if you have a sub and are only using them for mids&highs you will not need the full 100w rms because producing mids&highs does not require as much power as lows.

So, yes that amp is more than sufficient it will sound excellent.

  4. i have had the 6x9's in a previous car before there ok,i had them hooked just to the headunit though. i found them to have very good mids with pretty bad highs and the bass that it put out was good but at times felt very distorted. so there not bad speakers i have just been disappointed with alpines speakers recently
