Question:

Should I consider moving to New York City?

I am 24 years old and I graduated with my bachelor's degree in history last year. I live in an incredibly small town in Kentucky. This county only has four stoplights in the whole county. Obviously the job market is horrible. I am unemployed because I just got laid off from my very low paying factory job. I am ready for a change. I just don't know what to do exactly. I am interested in writing and I love the thought of working in publishing. I just want to get out where there are more opportunities. I just have to do it all by myself and that is kind of scary because all of my friends are already married of course. I am excited at the thought of living in New York and a little scared too. I was wondering what advice anyone from New York would give me. Should I just go and try it out?

  1. New York City is a great place to live. However, it's a very high cost of living. But it is really fun and never boring. If you're interested in getting a job in the city, you may want to consider living in a place nearby in New Jersey, parts of Long Island, Westchester, or Connecticut.

  2. Go for it!!! I moved to NY from Missouri and I love it!  I came up without a job, found one, and have lived here for almost 4 years.  I am also 24 years old...

It would be ideal to have a job before you move - but honestly, you won't.  It would be near impossible to convince a company to hire you when they know you're going to have to relocate - when they see on your resume that you are in KY, they will not seriously consider you - especially in this job market.

My advice is to save up some $$ - you will probably need between 3K - 5K, and go for it.  The cost of living is expensive, but jobs out here pay a lot.  You're young and will be able to find a job, just be prepared to work hard - because in NY you work hard and play harder.  :)

Good luck, and please feel free to send me a message if you have any more questions.  :)

  3. i don't suggest coming here unless you have some bank. You will probably need to live in the outer boroughs and rent a studio or get roommates in the meantime.  Cost of living is high here... if youre looking to get into publishing you may need to show some of your works. A degree in history won't get you much but NYC is always in need of School teachers. Maybe you can teach writing, grammar etc... and do writing for magazines on the side.

There are more opportunities here but you have to make that move and go after them. Its better than living in a small town... go for it

  4. its huge, the cost of living is really high, so its not a place to move to unless you have an establised job that pays enough for $2000 on up rent, although the suburbs are worth looking into especially new jersey where the taxes are lower and new york is just a train ride away, although if you have a degree in history then chances are that you can be a history teacher and there are always jobs for teachers for the NYC board of ed. so thats something to consider.

but definitely find a job and reputable place to live before you move there.
