Question:

Should I consult my insurance about my roofing problem?

I live in a semi-detached home and am in the process of having my half roofed/shingled. The problem is that it's a weird design and ideally, the other half (my neighbours) should be getting theirs done too but they are not interested. This is despite very compelling evidence/logic by the roofer (who is also a roofing inspector) that they are not only doing a diservice to and potentially harming the integrity of their roof, but more to my concern, my roof too. Would forwarding this information to my insurance help me or just give them a reason to increase my insurance costs?

  1. I don't think  that you need to notify your insurers as they are unlikely to cover anything relating to the design/maintenance of the roof. If what you are doing could result in your neighbours suffering damage then that might be a material fact you should notify your insurers about.

  2. since you do not own the other half there really is nothing you can do.  notifying your insurnace of this will only make them realize your home is a higher risk to insure...
