Should I continue band in college or give it up?

I've been in band since sixth grade and I play flute and clarinet. I'm a senior in high school and after being in marching band for four years, i'm tired of it. It sucks to have to say to your friends "I can't go with you guys. I have band practice" or to not be able to sit with your friends during a football game because your in band.

What should I do? Did anyone else have this issue? Did you stay in band or did you drop it in college? Why?

  1. nobody on here can tell you what you should do.

but judging from what you said..."i'm tired of it. It sucks to have to say to your friends "I can't go with you guys. I have band practice" or to not be able to sit with your friends during a football game because your in band."..........

it sounds like you should just quit after highschool.

because if you don't like it, and your heart isn't in it...you're worthless to the band of people who love what they are doing, who live for band, and who want to be there.

i'm not saying you are actually "worthless" i'm just saying you shouldn't be there to drag down the band when you don't want to be there.

nobody is making you, so why stick with it? if it's not where your heart is, your body shouldnt' be there.

but who knows....maybe you'll regret it if you quit?

  2. Hahaha continue it, it'll do you good when applying for colleges.

  3. I played clarinet up until high school until I dropped it, and personally, it's one of my biggest regrets. Sometimes when Im browsing the radio I come across a classical music station and I even get a little teary eyed listening to the winds play.

I meant to just quit band and continue on my own, but eventually I lost time for it and I just havent picked it up in years, now.

If it really bores you and you honestly no longer like it, quit. But   if you like it but just hate having to cancel your dinner plans, maybe not such a great idea in the end. You can always reschedule dinner but the pride that comes with being able to play some of the world's most beautiful music, not so much.

  4. I agree with the others that if you no longer enjoy playing, it's time to quit.  However, if the issue is that you can't join your friends at football games, there are other options in college.  Some colleges have orchestras or concert bands that do not require marching.  There are often small ensemble classes such as woodwind quintets which are the best fun.

I joined the orchestra when I went to college and loved it.  I kept taking lessons on my instrument even though I wasn't majoring in music and continue enjoying it to this day through community orchestra and chamber groups.

If I were you, I'd stick with it ;-)
