  1. I find that the outside leaves on my violets -   I have been growing them for a while - can on occasion turn brown.. This can happen whenever they have been exposed to direct sunlight for a time, or perhaps if the leaves are getting wet. They mar the look of the plant and you should remove them.

I just pinch off these stems close to the base of the plant. This has never seemed to do any harm. You also, as the previous writer explained, must water them from the bottom. And no plant does well if you shock it with cold water.

By the way, violets do best in filtered sunlight.  Mine are glorious in the bathroom; it is often humid, and the window pane is not clear glass.

  2. when you water your violet you should water from the bottom with tepid water. if you water from the top and get the leaves wet especially with cold water it will turn the leaves brown. the brown leaves can be removed with a pair of scissors.
