Question:

Should I decorate a cover letter?

I'm applying for a job in an art-related field, and providing my portfolio. Is it too over the top to decorate a cover letter with something tasteful (like a border or a small graphic)? Or should I stick to just text and paper?

  1. Have your portfolio speak for itself, and still to the traditional cover letter.  Too much ‘craziness’ on the cover letter can distract and take away from your cover letter.  I can understand your want to be creative, but you could always hint at that in the interview, saying ‘I really wanted to make the cover letter more artistic,.’   This way, they know you at least had the though of going that extra step in the artistic nature.

  2. I wouldn't-the portfolio will speak for itself.

  3. Oh, please don't.  Let your portfolio do the talking - chances are the cover letter/resume will be seen first by a recruiter or HR person who will find the graphic cutesy rather than appropriate.

    Good luck.
