Question:

Should I do an event I'm already good at or one I'd like to try?

You can check out my other question if you really want to see times, but here's the deal.

I'm running in one week. I'm already doing the mile. I'm more of a distance runner, so I know I could do well at the 800. However, I'm also good at sprinting, because I have long legs. When we do sprinting in PE, I come in a little before the "average" kids because I'm not very good at starting or turning around. However, I like the feeling of running fast. I'm not so good at the start, though, so I was thinking I should maybe do the 200 meter dash.

I've never been timed at this, and I know I'd probably do better at the 800 meter run. Should I still go ahead and try it, or do the 800 meter run, which is more distance and better fit for me?

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but....

  1. It depends what kind of meet this is.  If this is just some random meet that doesn't count for anything, go ahead and do what you want.  However, if this is your league finals or something like that, you should probably do what you are best at.

  2. I think the 400M would be better for you than the 200M. You say you're more of a distance runner well the 200M is more for sprinters, by the time you get moving the race will be over. The 400M would be a good event for you, it takes speed but also endurance. Hey and depending on the timing of your events you can do both the 400M & 800M using the 400M as a warmup to your better event the 800M

  3. Well first of all, you should have your coach time you in practice as your running against the fastest on your team to see how fast you are. There's nothing worse than getting embarrased at a track meet.

  4. i think you should probobly try the 200, thats what i run and im more of a distance guy too
