Question:

Should I do swimming for school?

So I'm in a dilemma....

--swimming started aug 11 (and school doesn't start until sept 2)

--and now it's everyday for 2 hours until nov 1

--I get really tired each day (more like exhausted) from swimming

--This is a hard school year for me so I'm worried I won't get it all done

--i'm not very good at swimming

--I get REALLY nervous before meets...we can't choose our own events and so we usually swim hard events.

--however, I like being part of a team

--I like the people on it and we get along really well

--I like the jackets we get

So my question is, should I do swimming considering each of these things? And my second question is, how can I get myself to not be so nervous before meets?? Please help, thank you

  1. A few years ago, I was in your shoes when I joined my igh school's varsity swim team as a freshmen. I had swam competively in the past, but stopped for a while so i wasn't as fast as the otehr swimmers on the team. I aslo had my doubts about balancing long practices (we had 2 a days - both 2 hour practices) and managing school work. I also got EXTREMELY nervous before swim meets, as I was not allowed to choose my events. After my frst year however, I was certain I had made the right decision when I looked back on it. Even though it can seem unbarable and stressful at times, swimming for high school is a very rewarding experience. I was able to balance my time between swimming and school once I got into a routine. I suggest making a schedule for yourself so you can manage your time wisely. As for the tiredness, make sure you get enough sleep the night before and eat the right foods so that you perform to your  maximum potential and have enough energy to get through the day. I would suggest a high fiber and protein diet, adn eating a light, nourishing breakfast before practice. As for your nerves during swim meets, just learn to accept the challange placed before you (the events you have been selecte to swim) and remember that you are competing against yourself. The main goal of competitve swimmers is beating their personal best times. Don't worry about placing first in the race - concentrate on performing to the best of your abilities. In time, you will adjust to the routine of swimming. Please don't give up the opportunity you have to swim on a team - you will look back at the experience with no regrets! Good luck and remember that swimming is about challenging yourself! Have fun =)

  2. Just try it and tell the coach that your worried about your schoolwork. They might let you skip a pratice or two every once in a while. And for the meet part, just relax! Trust me it helps. And get a song stuck in your head to sing while swimming. Try it!

  3. Count yourself lucky, I live in a part of the uk where i cannot find swim teams or clubs and we dont do it in skool i would love to be able to go to meets and 1 day go to the olympics.

  4. give it a chance. you never know until you try. give it a couple years. if you really do not like it after a couple of years and you are not making junior olympics state qualifying times......then you may consider quitting.
