Question:

Should I drop AP World History?

Well it is summer vacation right now but I was assigned summer homework from my AP World History class which I'll be taking once school starts again. I just began working on the assignment and it is okay but it requires a lot of thinking and is very very time consuming. We also have to memorize over hundreds of terms, dates and locations before we get back for a test. My memory is a little less than average so I think I'm going to have a lot of trouble in that class. Many juniors who have taken this class before have also told me the teacher is very difficult. I would say I'm a fairly smart student but I'm definitely not the straight A's one. I would say I'm probably going to get a around a C to a B- in this class. It is better to get an A in a normal class than a C in an AP class. Should I drop this class and just take normal world history?

  1. No! Took it, done it, passed it. I to was lazy this year and got a high B for my final grade plus it will look great on your college app

  2. Drop the class and enjoy your youth!  It isn't going to matter in the long run, especially if your SAT scores are high and admission essay is good.  When I was a high school student, I took chemistry and struggled every day with it.  Looking back, it was definitely NOT worth it!

Besides, an A looks a heck of a lot better on a college application that a C!!!  Don't listen to these other idiots, because they don't know what they're talking about.

  3. Do what you're more comfortable with.

Sounds to me like  you want to drop it, so drop it and take the other class.

  4. Take AP. I was the same way last year when I was a sophomore just starting my APUSH class, and I ended up being one of my teacher's favorites and passing the exam with flying colors, as well as averaging an A in that class. Just push yourself :). World History is a fun subject anyway, at least Honors World History in freshman year was :p.

Btw, do you live in New Jersey? I could swear I heard someone in my SAT prep class a few hours ago mentioning this :/.

  5. Get your butt in gear. You'll be glad once you've completed this challenge. There are many college scholarships for students who've taken AP classes in high school. Even if you get a "c", you'll have completed the class with honors. Congratulations, in advance. You can do it!

  6. NO dont it will look GREAT on your college application

  7. First of all, if you're wicked lazy you may be in trouble, you have a TON of work in AP classes, all of which you need to do or your grade will drop dramatically.  If you're not up to having an hour of homework just for one class every night, then you probably won't like AP World.  Second of all, you'll have a ton of writing you'll need to do for the class, and if you're not that strong a writer you'll struggle.  You need to be able to write a coherent, college-level essay in 25 minutes for the exam.  And if you have a rough time memorizing things, flash cards help to an extent, but in the AP class I took last year we had over 600 key terms we had to know for the AP exam, and if you think you'll have trouble remembering about that much info, then yes you may want to reconsider taking the class.  It's definitely a challenge, but what you also want to keep in mind is, yes, colleges would rather you get a B- or a C in an AP class than a regular class, and if you were recommended for the class, you can probably handle it.  I'd suggest finishing your summer work, try memorizing as many of the key terms as you can, go into school and try the class out for a week or two.  If it's still too much work for you, you can always drop it and take an easier course.  Good luck!

Edit:  My brother is taking AP World, and he's a sophomore, so I think you'll be ok.  From what I hear, the class isn't that bad, and you can fudge it a little on the exam if you need to.  Take a chance with it, it'll be worth it.

  8. i considered it too but it really wasnt too bad. always do extra credit and anything like that offered, try to do all the assignments even if you get help from a friend so your average doesnt go down and study. most importantly pay attention because you want to do good on tests. the test isnt too hard, jsut a pain in the butt. but overall it isnt bad. i got a 3 and thats ok shoot for a 4 or 5 but the college im looking at accepts 3s
