Question:

Should I expect her to shed?

My Royal has gotten a little rougher over the last few days and rubs her head against my hands when I have her out. Her head has got a blue colour to it when in certain lights. Can I expect to see her shed soon? How long does it take for them to shed once they start? It's not too nice on the hands anymore now she's not so smooth. She hasn't been sitting in her water bowl soaking either

  1. Sounds like it. =)

You will notice her eyes go very opaque and 'milky' coloured soon. After a few days of this milkyness she will return to normal colouring, then a few days after this the actual shed will occur.

Mist her enclosure once per day just to help her out and raise the humidity, although she probably wont need it.

    Hope this helps!

  2. she will probably shed soon...make sure there is something in her tank that she can rub against when it is time for her to shed...driftwood or something.  buy it at the pet store so that there is less chance of bugs.  even if i get the wood at the pet store i still bake it at 200 - 225 F for about 2 hours then let it cool.  not all snakes soak themselves before sheding...i have 5 snakes (including 2 royals) and none of them soak themselves.

the entire process of shedding (from the time their tummy starts to turn pinkish) can take about 2 weeks.

  3. should be pretty soon.

  4. ye i'd say yours is gonna shed. a nice way to help a sheddign snake is to get a pillow case and soak it in water. Then squeeze all the water out so it's damp. Then you just throw in the snake and it helps them out.

  5. Yes, she will shed soon. Her belly should be a pinkish color and then her eyes will be a cloudy blue. During that time, you shouldn't hold her because she might mistake you as food. And the reason for that is because she won't be able to see you that well so if something(a finger) goes down in the tank, she might think you're feeding her. After the eyes fade then you can pick her up and soak her in a bath tub or in a sink or a plastic tub with warm water for maybe an hour or so(snakes can swim so don't worry about you drowning her) And I would do this every day until she actually shed.

Well after her eyes fades from the cloudiness then it should only take her about a week or so to finish the whole shedding process.

Also I would recommend putting something in the cage for her to get a hold of it so she can pull her skin off. Maybe a half log for her(to shed and also for a home) or a medium sized rock. But you don't really need it because most snakes could just use the side of a tank to shed(that's what my red tail boas did)

Also during the shedding process, most likely she wouldn't eat so it would be fine. Just give her a week after that and she should be eating again. And if she doesn't, it alright too. Ball pythons usually are very picky eaters and they can survive up to a week without eating. So it's nothing to worry about. Just let her be for a week and then things should be back to normal.

Hope this could help you! Email me if you have any more questions =]

  6. yes thats what it means, in the next few days or maybe right now, you may notice her eyes changing colour, meaning they are gunan start to shed, it doesn't take very long to shed either. It should be over within the next week or so. But if you would like to aid her shedding, you can mist her cage every once and a while to raise the humidity.

    Hope I helped,

    Adam
