Should I feed my zebra finch mealworms?

I want to add some more protein to their diet because a cute little fuzzball just hatched and their taking care of the little baby so I wanted to make their diet better.

I know its supposed to be a more balanced diet

(their just on seed)

Ive tried feeding them vegetables and fruit but they didnt touch it.

so I was wondering how can I introduce that new food into their cage (Preferably in a seperate container not in the seed so I can take veggies and stuff out after a few hours)

also if mealworms are a good idea, where do I get them

and how do I give it to them (cut up, as is ect..)

Thanks :D

  1. You can feed your zebra meal worms.  You can probably buy alive or dried ones at the petstore.  I think you can buy them in different sizes too.  You need to find small ones for your zebras if possible.

Here is an alternative.  The way my zebra get their protein is by eating chicken eggs.  The egg provide then with protein and the shell provides then with calcium.    It's pretty easy to prepare.  Just take an boiled egg and chop it up into tiny little pieces(shell and all) and serve a portion of it on a dish.  You can store extra portion in the frig or freezer for later use.  If you want to get fancy there are "egg food" recipe for birds online.

The way I introduce new food is to mix a little bit new food with the old food in a seperate dish.  Add more of the new food and less of the old as the birds get use to eating the new food.

You can also remove all food source from the cage except for the new food, but I have never done it to my birds before.

  2. yes you should

  3. My zebras  love broccoli,I use baby meal worms whole

and they eat them up pretty quick.

  4. Usually they are strictly on a seed and fruit diet but if you want to give them mealworms its not going to hurt them. Im not sure if they will eat it but its worth a try. Meal worms can be bought at any petco or petsmart in the refrigerator there. As feeding it to them if your finches dont bite feeding it out of your hand is fine. But if you hate touching bugs tweezers would work just fine. Just make sure they dont get any of the sawdust food that comes with the mealworms in a cup.

  5. I had two long tailed lizards and I fed them both crickets and mealworms. The crickets were prob. better because before i even got through the whole plastic can of live worms, they started turning into cocoons =\ or you could get the refrigerated mealworms that are dead. Just serve them whole too. that's the natural way for lizards.
