My 16.2 TB cross is at grass at the moment and he is at normal weight.

I want to start feeding him to put on condition as i want to take him to shows.

He will be having Baileys Topline Mix, Alfa-A Oil Chaff and Codliver Oil.

My question is: Should I also be feeding something like Speedi Beet?

  1. During the summer when there is plenty of grass you should not need to give him extra feed. Wait until the winter months.

  2. Hay is perfectly fine

  3. that sounds pretty good give it a try...

a really good feed for a soon to be preformance horse would be--

ReNew by signature series -- b.c. the #1 ingreedient is beet pulp wich would do him well

and alfafa balancer- its a loose mineral

  4. that sounds pretty good, but it also sounds as though he is getting enough forage in the form of grass. If you start feeding him will he 'hot up' etc and get hard to ride??? If he does start getting tizzy etc when you ride him then cut the feed out again as he will be getting enough of the minerals etc that he needs from the grass. I always use baileys top line and it works wanders, but for some reason it 'hots up' my tbx gerlding! he goes crazy. You could also try just a mix, like the dobson and horrel pasture mix..... These contain everything the horse needs. I feed this with a chaff and some oil.

    good luck

  5. just try it... let me know what happens.

  6. I don't know.

  7. Number 1 rule - feed for the work you are doing not what you are going to do. So if you are in light work and bringing back to fitness, don't start feeding straight away.

Introduce gradually as you step up the work rate. I also wonder why you are feeding alfa-a oil and codliver oil - too much oil added to the diet can be dodgy as you might need to add vitamin E too. Also, nearly everyone recommends feeding horses vegetable based oils these days rather than fish-based (concerns from BSE etc.) As for the speedibeet, that has yet more oil in it and really isn't necessary at this time of year - give a good quantity of alfa which will provide all the necessary fibre and a good dose of minerals as well.

  8. no i dont think you should but give it a try and see what happens

  9. i think what you will give him is fine.

The oils will esure his coat will shine and the chaff and mix will give him some substance.

i always feed bran to my horses too, it helps keep the manure in "balls" rather than all sloppy so it is alot easia to clean up.

    good luck at your shows.

  10. I would wait, sounds like he look good and has plenty of pasture.  In the winter to help keep weight on give him a cup or corn oil every day:)  Best of luck with the shows and have fun:)
