...Should I feel bad?

My friend is giving me a kitten (her cat had 3) and my parents okay'd it and are paying for everything it needs (spaying, shots, toys, litter box, ect) But my brother said I was horrible for taking it and I coulda saved a kitten from a shelter instead, but this kitten would have ended up at a shelter too. So aren't I saving it?

As long as you didn't buy your kitten from a pet store or a back yard breeder (horrible things - they cause much suffering) then the important thing is that you provide a responsible, permanent, loving home for your kitten, NOT where the kitten came from.  When so many people view pets as disposable items, what good does it do to adopt a shelter kitten, have it grow up, then take it back to the shelter because you're tired of it?  That's the fate of a great number of pets.  So tell your brother that it doesn't matter where the kitten came from, what matters most is that you're going to take proper care of it forever.

Your brother is right but so are you So its kinda 50/50 with this situation Because youre right The cat mightve ended up in a shelter if they didnt find a home for it after a while But your brother is right to because theres way too many animals in shelters that need a home but no one thereto give them one Dont beat yourself up about it though Theres no point in overthinking the situation if you dont have to Just next time if you decide to get another pet Go to a shelter or take in a stray They could use a loving home instead of being caged up the entire time for the rest of their life untill they get put to sleep Its a sobering thought But it happens everyday Just make sure you get your kitten neutered/spayed so if they ever get out or if you ever decide to get another cat They dont have babies therefore increasing the amount of abandoned animals in shelters and the streets

I think we should all try to help shelter pets but as far as I am concerned ...all pets need a home regardless of where they start out from.  I have adopted from shelters and privately...life leads you certain directions.  Don't feel bad...just give your kitty a good life.

I think your brother is just trying to make you feel bad.  Maybe he wanted a kitten?  I think there is nothing wrong with getting a kitten from a friend and think about how good your friend will feel knowing her kitten is in good hands.

Your brother is just jealous he cant have a kitten as cute as yours or one at all. And I would say that you are saving it if it would have went to a shelter.

Don't let your brother make you feel guilty; if you got a kitten from a shelter, chances are someone else would've taken it if you hadn't. Chances are someone would have taken your friend's kitten as well- they're just babies; they go quick. ^^

ur brother sounds like he either is very passionate about helping animal shelters, or he's just being negative.  it sounds like u want that kitten, it's been offered 2 u, so accept it!

aawwee. (: that is very nice of your parents! but dont make your brother make you feel bad. i mean, you are saving a kitten, since it wouldve been in the shelter anyway! i mean, he probably means you could have saved a cat who has been in the shelter to long for its health. (ok that helped) but your fine, and shouldnt feel bad. but if for some reason you do, try volunteering at a shelter, so atleast you feel better about helping other animals for free!

keep the cat, give brother to a shelter.

or at least, teach the cat to pee on his bed.

you saved it, you are right.

letting your cat get pregnant just to have the kittens is wrong, shelters are overflowing with kittens.

and be sure to thank your parents and do some extra chores. most kids arent so lucky.
